Do you need a license to hunt in Texas?
Texas hunting laws require all hunters born after September 2, 1971, to get certified by completing a Texas hunters safety course. This certification is sometimes called a “Texas hunting license.”

How much does the Texas Hunter-Ed course cost?
The Texas Hunter-Ed Course for adults is $34.95. Hunters over 17 will also pay a $5.25 Texas Parks & Wildlife Department fee.
Do I need Texas hunter safety education?
By law, you will need to pass a hunter safety education course if you were born on or after September 2, 1971, in order to legally hunt in Texas.
What is the minimum age to take this online hunter safety course?
You must be at least 9 years old to take this online course.
Is the Texas Hunter-Ed course approved by the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department?
Yes, the Texas Hunter-Ed course is approved and accepted by the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department.
Is my Texas Hunter Education Certificate accepted elsewhere?
All U.S. states, provinces, and other countries that have mandatory hunter education requirements will accept the Texas Hunter Education Certificate. Likewise, Texas will accept Hunter Education Certificates issued by other jurisdictions that meet official IHEA-USA requirements. (This is known as “reciprocity.”)
How should I prepare for the hunter safety exam?
These comprehensive study guides contain all the information you’ll need to know for the exam. Just be sure to select your state or province!
I failed a unit quiz. Does this mean I failed the course?
No worries. If you fail a quiz, you can take it again until you pass. Hunters 17 years of age or older must score at least 60% on the unit quizzes to pass. Hunters under 17 years old must score at least 80% on the unit quizzes to pass.
Do I have to take an online exam?
If you are 17 years of age or older, the Hunter Education Certification Exam is the exam you take at the end of the online course. You must score at least 75% on the Hunter Education Certification Exam to pass. You have unlimited attempts to pass. If you are under 17 years old, you must complete this online course for admission to the Field Day. You are required to attend the Field Day to complete your hunter safety certification.
Do I need to complete the hunter safety course and exam in one sitting?
Nope. You can save your progress and come back anytime you’d like!
About Your Certification
Once you pass and pay for the online course, you will be able to immediately print your proof of online completion and/or request that a PDF be emailed to you.
If you are under 17 years of age, you will need to bring this document to your Field Day.
What is the permanent Texas Hunter Education Certificate?
The Hunter Education Certificate is proof that you have successfully completed all the hunter education requirements and allows you to legally purchase a hunting license in Texas.
If you are 17 years or older, you can access your permanent Hunter Education Certificate by visiting https://tpwd.elementlms.com/ and clicking the button that reads: “Am I Certified?” Your certificate will be available within 10 days.
If you are under 17 years of age, you will receive the Hunter Education Certificate from the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department after you successfully complete the Field Day
What happens if I lose my hunter education card?
